The Family Planning 2020 Global Stakeholder Group met this week to examine the progress that has been made since February 2013. From definitions of the metrics needed to measure success to progress updates from each working group, the conversation outlined in this presentation raised critical questions about the current landscape of FP2020 and which indicators are required to measure ongoing success.
An examination of the year’s successes included the announcement of new commitment makers, 29 commitment-making countries and the establishment of 10 core indicators that will be reported in 69 countries. Stakeholders examined the breakdown of donor disbursements for family planning in 2013. Measures of progress went beyond commitments and donor funds. Participants examined metrics around online engagement, social media presence and media impact.
Stakeholder conversation oriented around four central questions, with discussion centered on how to better engage faith leaders as active players in FP2020. Of particular interest is the question of how FP2020 contributes to and complements existing structures focussed on MNCH initiatives. During the question and answer period, a series of stakeholders focused on the challenges, expectations and tactics unique to the countries and contexts they are working within.
Professor Fasli Jalal from the National Population and Family Planning Board in Indonesia provided a country snapshot report, sharing progress made by Indonesia since making a commitment to FP2020. Following this update, Dr. Kechi Ogbuagu and Ellen Starbird outlined the progress achieved in the Country Engagement Working Group, and John Skibiak and Alan Staple echoed with the progress and achievements of the Market Dynamics Working Group. Suzanne Ehlers and Siva Thanenthiran communicated the progress of the Rights and Empowerment Working Group, followed by an update on the progress of the Performance Monitoring and Accountability Working Group by Dr. Zeba Sathar and Dr. Marleen Temmerman. Each working group defined the targeted output, work streams and key activities that are a part of their respective work plans.
