Amref Health Africa in Canada: Ending Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C)

Amref Health Africa, the largest African-led international organization on the continent, provides training and health services in 35 countries in Africa. In 2009, Amref Health Africa launched the Alternative Rite of Passage (ARP) initiative, which “is a community-led and community-driven cultural alternative to FGM/C that retains the harmless cultural rituals and celebrations around womanhood while removing the harmful cut for girls.” Since the launch of that initiative, more than 15,000 girls have avoided FGM/C.
