Onome Ako was named Executive Director of Amref Health Africa in Canada by its Board of Directors in June 2019, bringing her expertise in strategic partnerships, resource mobilization, and program design, management and implementation to the role.
Onome joined Amref Health Africa in Canada in October 2014 as Director of Strategic Partnerships, having previously worked with World Vision Canada in various roles including Business Development Manager and Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility, Extractive Industries. Before moving to Canada in 2008, Onome worked with AfricaRecruit, a program of the NEPAD and Commonwealth Secretariat that seeks to mobilize skills and human resources for capacity-building in Africa. She has extensive experience in global development, having managed projects that have been implemented in Peru, Senegal, Mozambique, Madagascar, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Mexico, South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mongolia.
Onome is an associate of the Nigerian Leadership Initiative, a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network, and a mentor with the Creative Institute for Toronto Young (CITY) Leaders, United Way. She has an MSc in Management of NGOs and Social Policy and Participation in Developing Countries from the London School of Economics, United Kingdom.
